Chelsea manager, Enzo Maresca has cautioned fans that his team will concede goals this season as they adapt to playing out from the back.
Maresca’s comments came after the Blues’ 2-2 draw with Wrexham in his debut game in charge.
In a match held in California, Chelsea’s defensive lapses were exposed by the League One side, nearly resulting in a shock defeat.
Christopher Nkunku gave Chelsea an early lead in the first half, but Wrexham responded with second-half goals from Luke Bolton and Jack Marriott.
Chelsea managed to equalize with a late goal from Lesley Ugochukwu, salvaging a draw.
Maresca addressed the defensive errors, stating, “For sure, we are going to concede goals this season playing out from the back. Hopefully, not too many. It is one of the risks that you have trying to build from behind.”
Despite the defensive vulnerabilities, Maresca remains committed to this tactical approach.
When asked about the importance of maintaining this style of play, he affirmed, “Absolutely. I have no doubt.”
Maresca also said on whether a new goalkeeper is up on his priority list, he said: “We’ll see, we’ll see.
“In this moment we have four goalkeepers. Petrovic is still with us but injured. We will see with the timing. When the transfer window is open, anything can happen for us and for the rest.
“What I can say is Robert (Sanchez) did very well tonight and did very well since we started. For sure, the way we want to play, the goalkeeper is very, very important – one of the main positions. And I don’t want to talk about players that are not Chelsea players but I am very happy with Robert.”
